What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship includes a training program whereby the apprentice learns skills necessary for a particular trade and occupation. In apprenticeship training, the apprentice learns and earns at the same time. A close example is the Igbo apprenticeship system where young people learn a trade under a skilled and experienced trader for an agreed period after which they receive ‘settlement’ - which could be monetary, goods related to the trade, or a mix of both.

Another example is in India where the training is governed by the Apprenticeship Act of 1961. To maintain skilled human resources in the specified industry, the act makes it mandatory for a particular industry to provide apprenticeship training to those, who possess National Trade Certificate given by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT).

What is an Internship?

An internship is a form of experiential learning where university students undergo training that relates to the stream they have chosen for study. They get first-hand experience on the job and this will improve their skills and knowledge, increase their self-confidence and provide real-world exposure. The training usually lasts for a short duration, usually one to six months and it can be part-time or full-time, depending on the contract with the employer. The training may be paid or unpaid. The Interns are opportune to learn about sales, administrative, supervisory, and managerial education.

These two programs might seem similar but they have key differences.

  1. An apprenticeship is a training program conducted in an industry where the apprentice gets a chance to learn and earn at the same time while in an internship, the intern gets an opportunity to learn skills and knowledge in a chosen field.
  2. Apprenticeship is work-based training whereas internship is work-based learning.
  3. The time duration of the apprenticeship is usually longer than the internship training.
  4. Apprenticeship training is provided to prospective employees but internship training is provided to undergraduate students.
  5. Apprenticeship training is considered a part of vocational education and training. On the other hand, an internship may or may not be part of formal education.
  6. The trainees of an apprenticeship are called an apprentice. However, the trainees in the case of an internship are known as interns.
  7. An apprentice ends up with a job while interns gain experience.
  8. Apprenticeship training is always paid, unlike internships which may or may not be paid.
  9. In apprenticeship training, orientation and induction training is given which is not in the case of internship training.
